LUMI

LUMI remains a unique design, heralding a new interest in sustainable design. An early prototype is held in the state collection of Museum Victoria and the subsequent flat-packed design is installed in residences and gardens around Australia.

The award winning ‘LUMI – Illuminated rainwater storage’ made a significant contribution to the future of water conservation and design.

In 2006, Katrina wrote

"As a designer, I was inspired to repackage an old rural icon – the Australian rainwater tank – as a contemporary architectural object that would engage city dwellers with an important and necessary lifestyle change (water saving). LUMI was driven by my desire to integrate water conservation and architecture, with aesthetics in mind... LUMI is an object to be displayed not hidden. I envisaged the balconies of high-rise buildings as LUMI's ultimate destination."

LUMI won the City of Melbourne Sustainability Design Award in 2006 – an award which was followed by media attention and sales enquiries from Europe, USA and Japan.

LUMI is featured in 1000 New Eco Products (R. Proctor, 2009) and 1000 Designs for the Garden (Rudlege, 2010) and has been published in numerous Australian and international design magazines including Houses, Vogue Living, SDQ, Monument and Wallpaper.

In 2008, LUMI was installed in the Hollywood Hills for the US television series ‘Alter Eco’ hosted by Entourage celebrity Adrian Grenier.
